Cool Vendors in PPM Method, 2010
Many organizations spend too much time focused on developing a customized project and program methodology. We've selected four vendors that can provide solid solutions that are better, faster and less expensive than most organizations can achieve internally.

Analysis by Donna Fitzgerald
Why Cool: TenStep can best be viewed as two companies in one — methodology and services. For smaller companies with only a few PMs, TenStep has simple methodology and templates on the Web for immediate use at a very low price. For larger organizations, TenStep has a full, mature methodology with dozens of integrated content libraries. Like other vendors in this space, it has enough open and free material to ensure that you are making the right decision before you buy. Unlike other companies, TenStep is divided into scalable processes for small, midsize and large projects. The focus for small projects is highly agile, while large projects have more rigor and structure. TenStep also comes in two views — a highly intuitive "10 step" model and a second view based on the PMBOK guide.
Where TenStep really differentiates is its focus on organizations that are suffering less from a shortage of methodology than from a surfeit of methods. TenStep offers a full range of consulting and training services to help companies implement project management, set up and run a PMO, and more. In speaking with clients that have chosen TenStep, the value case that most impressed us was the story of a large, mission-critical project where TenStep helped train and establish a common language among a very large team in a little less than six weeks. The PM commented that one of the primary reasons he was successful was because the team did not have to waste time trying to "reinvent the wheel." TenStep has more than 55 offices around the world and can provide common methodology and support in more than 25 languages. On a final note, TenStep has a wide distribution of more than 6,000 product licenses all over the world.
Challenges: TenStep might be squeezed from the sides and the top by other training companies and large consulting companies. While anything is possible, we believe the company has a solid enough reputation and a large enough market to negate most normal competitive pressures.
Who Should Care: CIOs, PMO heads, and individual project or program managers, as well as anyone looking to establish a solid PMO that is in harmony with the PMBOK. Also, anyone looking to start up an enterprise PMO (EPMO) in an organization that cannot find agreement from among the many methods being used.
